Harbour remembers Claude

Port St. Maarten’s management and staff laid a wreath at the statue of the late Dr. Claude Wathey in front of the Cruise Terminal building on Wednesday, marking what would have been his 93rd birthday.

The construction of a modern seaport was one of Dr. Wathey’s visions for the country. Today the port encompasses 13 different companies with more than 70 employees. The Port St. Maarten Group of Companies has diversified its activities into real estate and port consultancy, as well as owning and operating the port’s two mobile harbour cranes. St. Maarten is a successful cruise destination and the port has received many accolades that recognise its position in the region and its role in local employment and business. The port generates one-third of St. Maarten’s gross domestic product (GDP) from its cruise and cargo operations.
