Attendees at the Hat and Tie Party holding hands and singing “Blessed be the Ties that Bind.”
ST. EUSTATIUS--The elderly ladies of St. Eustatius were decked out in their finery and fancy hats and the men in their fabulous ties during a Hat and Tie Party at Mike van Putten Youth Centre on Thursday evening.
Among the guests were Acting Government Commissioner Mervyn Stergers and his wife. “When I walked in and saw all the ladies in their beautiful hats and the men in their ties, I did not have on my tie. But I had it with me, so I quickly put it on,” Stegers said.
The senior guests came not only from Statia, but from other Caribbean islands and countries as well.
The event was organised by “Lady of Culture” Marcella Gibbs-Marsdin.
Government Department Caribbean Netherlands RCN, which oversees the old age pension AOV, presented a gift to all pensioners present at the event. The gift contained an enamel cup, a bottle of juice and a booklet with valuable information about senior-citizens’ benefits. Seniors who were not present may go to Rachel Spanner-Carty’s office and pick up their gift.
The evening consisted of music, dance, food and drinks, and there was a raffle with prizes.
