Traffic control at the airport

BONAIRE--The Royal Dutch Marechaussee and the Caribbean Netherlands Police Corps KPCN carried out several joint actions on Friday, June 18.

In the afternoon, a preventive search was held at Flamingo International Airport, while at the same time vehicles were checked near the entrance.

Later in the evening, traffic controls took place on Kaya Korona and the Kaya C.E.B. Hellmund. Marechaussees intend to organise more regular actions whereby preventive searches are carried out, on occasion in cooperation with various law enforcement system partners.

According to the Weapons Act BES (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba), the border police and KPCN have the authority to check the clothing of persons at the airport and their luggage for the presence of firearms, with as purpose to enhance safety on and around the airport premises. Passengers and other persons present were randomly selected and subjected to a body search.

During the traffic control that took place at the access road to the terminal, they checked whether motorists were in possession of a valid driver’s licence and a vehicle registration certificate, among other things.

During the evening controls elsewhere, authorities confiscated a machete and small quantities of marijuana. They issued in total 37 traffic fines, while an illegal resident was arrested and handed over to KPCN’s Immigration Department.
