Kids get close to heavy equipment

PHILIPSBURG--A number of children had a chance to sit in the driver’s seat of some of the biggest trucks on the island operated by St. Maarten Concrete Company during the company’s first “Touch a Truck Day” held at the parking lot of the Government Administration Building from 10:00am to 5:00pm Saturday.

The event enabled children and parents to get close to some of the heavy equipment used to deliver the concrete to construction projects around the island. Children were excited as they climbed into some of the heavy equipment on site.

The event was also a means of raising funds which will go to the I Can Foundation Children’s Home in Dutch Quarter. Youngsters from the home also attended the event.

“Many were excited at the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of the company’s fleet of trucks,” it was stated in a press release.

“The event was a huge success for us and especially for the children themselves. It was a day filled with lots of fun and games, and we enjoyed giving the children supervised access to these trucks so they can touch them and feel what it is like being in one,” St. Maarten Concrete General Manager Kenecia David said.

Some adults recalled what it was like for them as children when they saw the trucks passing by.

“I always wanted to get inside the truck and especially wanted to blow the horn because it was so loud and it is so good to see St. Maarten concrete doing this as an activity for children to enjoy,” one parent commented.

Other activities on that day included lime-and-spoon races, bouncing castle and several chances to win prizes.

St. Maarten Concrete plans to host the event annually.
