ANGUILLA—In response to the government’s decision to restrict all vessels in Anguillian waters Leader of the Opposition Palmavon Webster has put forward suggestions to avoid the financial strain on fishermen and their families at this time. She also suggests that the restriction may impact food security at a time when it is necessary to invest in the ability to feed ourselves.
Using suggestions from some of the fishermen following a meeting on Tuesday Webster made several suggestions. The first was to encourage the fishermen to be part of the solution by soliciting their assistance in reporting unknown vessels in Anguillian waters. Another idea was to have a system to allow specific days and times for fishermen to function. She is also asking to government to have a package of compensation for fishermen for the loss of income and to classify both fishermen and farmers as essential services.
“I believe that patrolling our waters and making provisions for our fishermen can be solved through effective negotiation and cooperation from all stakeholders. We must always seek to do right by our people. After all, they are the ones who elect us to work in their best interest. I continue to pledge my full support to the government and our people during this difficult time and it is my hope that we will communicate more effectively on such issues in the interest of our people,” she said, noting that she was encouraged to be included by Premier Victor Banks in the meeting with the fishermen.
