PHILIPSBURG--Police are investigating the shooting of a man who was going to the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) Emergency Room at 7:00am Sunday. Detectives are still trying to piece together what transpired in the hospital parking lot.
The man had been seen earlier at a night club in Simpson Bay and assaulted a worker at the club. Reports suggest that he cut the bartender’s face with a broken glass. Security escorted him outside, but he sustained cuts to his hand and went to the hospital moments later to seek treatment.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said on Sunday that investigating officers learnt that the victim had been shot in the parking lot and after the shooting was treated by the medical staff who immediately took him to the Operating Room to be operated on.
“The victim was shot in the right side of his upper body. Who the suspect(s) is that is responsible for the shooting and the reason why it took place is being investigated by detectives who are interviewing witnesses and the Forensic Department which is collecting evidence from the scene,” said Henson.
The Daily Herald understands that the man, who is a resident of Simpson Bay, was transported abroad for further treatment.
The bartender received medical treatment and is expected to recover from her injuries.
