Motorbike rider injured in French Quarter accident

MARIGOT--A 19-year-old motorbike rider is in critical condition in hospital following a serious accident in French Quarter early Wednesday morning at 8:00.

According to the Gendarmerie’s Capitaine Olivier Esseul, the young man’s motor cross bike collided with the rear of a car that was turning left at the Pharmacy on the RN7 and then ricocheted into the front of a second car that was waiting to make the left turn at the pharmacy. Both cars were badly damaged, and the motorbike destroyed.
The rider was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the French-side hospital but then evacuated to the Dutch-side Medical Center. The nature of his injuries was not immediately known, but it was understood he was sent to the Dutch side for specialist trauma treatment.
Elsewhere, on Tuesday afternoon a vendor on the Marigot waterfront was attacked with a knife by an individual demanding money. The vendor refused to hand over any money. It was understood from witnesses that the attacker was a drug addict. The Gendarmerie has opened an investigation.
