SYNOPSIS:
An area of convection associated with a tropical wave is propagating toward St Maarten. Based on satellite data, this will likely produce periods of heavy showers, along with scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds. Due to already saturated soils from recent rainfall, flooding, rock fall and/or landslides remain a threat in vulnerable areas. Residents and motorists in these areas are advised to exercise caution when in these areas and/or avoid them whenever possible.
Moderate marine conditions will prevail during this forecast period, with wave heights up to 6 feet. A deterioration can be expected on Saturday. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution.
STATE OF THE SEA: Slight to Moderate WAVES/SWELLS: 4 to 6 feet
SPECIAL FEATURE: As of 8:00am, the elongated low pressure system located in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, several hundred miles southeast of the Lesser Antilles, is producing limited shower and thunderstorm activity.
Some slow development is possible with this system and a tropical depression could form well east of the Lesser Antilles early next week while the low moves west- northwest at 10-15mph. Environmental conditions are now
forecast to become less favorable for development as the system approaches the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday. Nevertheless, it currently has a moderate (40 percent) chance of formation through the next 5 days.
The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor this feature.
OUTLOOK through Sunday midday: Partly cloudy and breezy with isolated showers possible.
