PHILIPSBURG--Justice Minister Anna Richardson met with correctional officers and other staff of the Pointe Blanche prison on Wednesday, May 13, to discuss their challenges and grievances. The meeting was requested by the correctional officers.

“Since her appointment, the minister [Richardson – Ed.] and her support staff have been diligently working to address a number of challenges within the Ministry of Justice, with the detention centres and staff well-being being a high priority,” said the Justice Ministry in a press release on Thursday.

After hearing their concerns, Richardson told the officers that she is “actively dedicated” to finding concrete, long-term solutions for the employees’ problems. Some of these include poor working conditions and severe staff shortages at the detention facilities.

Richardson said some issues had not been remedied because of “instability in the past.”

According to the Justice Ministry, Richardson will be meeting with personnel of other departments in the justice system in the coming days.
