Rider breaks two legs in third day-in-a-row scooter accident

PHILIPSBURG--A scooter rider broke two legs in a traffic accident on Nisbeth Road, near the old post office in Philipsburg around 7:50am this morning.

  It is the third day in a row that Police Force St. Maarten dealt with a serious accident involving a scooter.

  Preliminary investigation indicated that the scooter and a red SUV were both travelling in the direction of the traffic light on the Nisbeth Road. According to police, the driver of the SUV indicated to turn towards the Codville Webster Street. The scooter rider was overtaking several vehicles on Nisbeth Road while using his cell phone and slammed into the SUV making the turn.

  The young rider was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Centre (SMMC) to treat his fractured legs and face and upper body injuries. His condition is serious, but stable, said Police spokesman Josepha.
