PHILIPSBURG--Port St. Maarten announced on Wednesday that preparations for tonight’s fireworks display in Great Bay are still going ahead. However, whether the display happens will depend on weather conditions at the time.
The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) issued a special update at 5:00pm Tuesday saying that the island would be affected by a strengthening high-pressure ridge. Winds have been forecast to gust up to 35-40 miles per hour Thursday night into Friday, close to tropical storm strength, but not sustained. Seas are apparently to peak near 11 feet around then.
The fireworks display is a collaborative effort of government, businessman Bobby Velasquez, and Port St. Maarten.
