Sandy Ground stand-off turns violent

UPDATE:

A stand-off between protesters barricading the Sandy Ground bridge and the gendarmes has escalated into violence this afternoon.

Shortly before 2:00pm, gendarmes made a push to move protesters from the bridge. Protesters apparently set the barricade, made of an old car, tyres and wooden pallets, on fire. The gendarmes have been firing tear gas cannisters into the crowd in an effort to force them to disperse. However, as of 2:35pm, the situation remains volatile as the gendarmes are still trying to quell the unrest. The protest action is a reaction against the imposition of the natural risk prevention plan, also known as PPRN and against the prevailing issue of bromates in the French side's drinking water.
