St. Maarten rocked by 3.8-magnitude quake

PHILIPSBURG--It started as a low rumble then everything started to shake.

This was the general description from several residents who experienced the 3.8 magnitude earthquake around 6:28pm on Thursday.The quake occurred 19 kilometres/12 miles east north east of the island at a depth of 34.6 kilometres in the ocean, according to the United States Geological Survey.The relatively near quake was felt by residents on both sides of the island.Right after the quake residents took to social media, especially Facebook.com to enquire if anyone else shared their experience.One resident living on Front Street said it felt like an explosion occurred in her building.
