Benny Sevinger (left) was sworn in as Aruba Member of Parliament (MP) despite being suspected of corruption with giving out government leased land as Minister of Infrastructure.
Governor Alfonso Boekhoudt had not wanted to do so while the AVP politician remained in pre-trial custody when the other newly elected representatives were installed on July 8, but his detention was recently suspended by the judge. Sevinger anchored the opposition party’s candidate list but still earned a seat based on “preferential” individual votes. There is no law barring him from legislative office until an irrevocable conviction.
