Pompiers at the scene
MARIGOT--It was learnt Tuesday that the fire in Baie Nettle on Sunday caused some significant material damage and loss, but fortunately no injuries or loss of life.
According to the Fire Department (sapeurs pompiers), the fire broke out in a mechanic’s workshop in Baie Nettle, near the Cadisco gas station. The cause of the fire was thought to be an overheating battery charger.
The wooden structure containing the workshop was quickly engulfed in flames, destroying three motorbikes, some engines and a car that was parked outside.
The delay in extinguishing the fire, according to the Fire Department, was because the closest hydrant was either dry or had very weak water pressure.
Water distributor SAUR had indicated earlier in a press release that there would be water interruptions between Marigot and Lowlands Sunday morning due to a rupture in the water line. However, by the time water was restored in the afternoon the fire hydrant was found not to be working, resulting in a truck leaving the scene to find water from a hydrant in Sandy Ground.
