Two men arrested in smuggling investigation

SIMPSON BAY--The St. Maarten Police Force KPSM announced that they arrested two men, K.M. and S.W., in the Simpson Bay area on Tuesday, April 14, as part of an ongoing investigation into drug smuggling.

Police’s Alpha Team arrested the men after they had picked up a package “in the vicinity of the airport.” Police did not confirm whether the men had picked up the package at the cargo facilities of Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA), as had been speculated.

“The two suspects were observed acting very suspiciously after picking up a package in the vicinity of the airport. Their questionable actions were noted by the police patrol and Customs personnel, who decided to stop the vehicle [that – Ed.] they were [driving] and control it,” said police in a press release.

Customs officers conducted the search of the car and found two packages of marijuana in the vehicle. Authorities did not disclose the quantity of marijuana found. However they did announce that the contraband was confiscated.

The men were later taken to the Philipsburg police station, where they are being held for questioning. “The Alpha Team is busy with this investigation,” said police.
