BUSH ROAD–Firefighters responded quickly to emergency calls of smoke and heat coming from the rooftop of the recently renovated mega supermarket Carrefour Market on Bush Road at 7: 35am Thursday.
Fire Department officials immediately went to work extinguishing the fire while police officers on scene diverted traffic, not allowing any traffic to access the Church Hill roundabout.
The fire was contained and officials managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building, minimising damage to the building and its contents. A total of 28 fire officials were on scene with three fire trucks.
As a result of the fire in the morning, traffic was on go-slow in the area for three hours. By 10:35am, the fire was totally under control and traffic was back to normal.
None of the workers were injured during the fire.
Fireman in charge Antonio Gibbs thanked his team for their courage and hard work to put out the fire.
The exact cause of the fire has not as yet been established, but it is believed it could have been an electrical surge.
Carrefour Managing Director Anil Sabnani told The Daily Herald on Thursday afternoon that he was still assessing the damage, but a considerable amount of goods had been destroyed as a result of the heat and smoke from the fire.
“I don’t know what to say right now. We worked very hard to get the supermarket open after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Now this,“he said.
Clean-up crews were seen working on clearing out the destroyed goods in the evening hours on Thursday. There is no word yet on when the business will reopen.
