PHILIPSBURG--Van Dorp has donated 56 books as part of its Gift a Book Programme – a seasonal campaign pledging to donate one book for every five books sold at any of its stores.
The goal of the programme is to promote the love of literacy in the community, while “putting it forward” to a good cause. A Donation Book Tracker ran for the month of December and finished on the 24th, with 56 books to be donated.
Of the 56 books that Van Dorp donated, two GED exam prep books were donated to K1 Britannia’s Work, Training and Social Development Programme (WTSD) for youths coming from challenging social and economic backgrounds, and 54 books were donated to 721 Kids Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to organising and operating afternoon school programmes for children and teens.
The books donated to 721 Kids Foundation included both reading books and educational workbooks for ages 4-15, to be used through their various programmes.
“During our reading sessions, children are taught to ‘live literature,’ which means to assist them in making the connections between all they do and everything they read.” said 721 Kids Foundation director Termada. “During the month of February, we are planning a Black History Month initiative called ‘Know your island heroes’, where the children will learn about our local heroes and what they contributed to our island.”
721 Kids is always looking for volunteers to come and read to the children kids once a month. Interested persons can reach out by emailing
