Time to help Dominica is now

Dear Editor,

In the past we on St. Maarten/St. Martin have repeatedly gone to the extent in helping those in our region who became victims of natural catastrophes.

It is something we should continue to do, when needed and where possible.

Now that it is Dominica this time that has been incredibly hard hit by a tropical storm, I believe we should do all we could to help the Dominican people. Dominican people on our island are generally known to be proud, hard-working people, who do not abuse what we have to offer.

They are people who integrate with us more than many other people and are known to treat us with great hospitality when we visit their beautiful island.

I would like to see us SXM’ers now showing solidarity with Dominica in every way we can.

In addition, government should temporarily for sure lift every restriction to allow Dominicans to enter SXM in order to stay with relatives and loved ones until such time that it is safe for them to return.

As far as I know Dominicans have always offered refuge to others from the region, but have never insisted on help from others - they are too proud.

It is up to us St. Martiners to come to their aid now. My 2 cents.
