DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Rene was located near latitude 18.6 North, longitude 35.8 West. Rene is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days, followed by a turn toward the northwest.

 

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast for the next couple of days, and Rene is expected to become a hurricane by Saturday.

 

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center.

 

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1000 mb (29.53 inches).
