Barbados U19 win one-day championship

Michael Palmer from St. Maarten was the best player for the Leeward Islands, scoring 96 runs in five innings and collecting five wickets.

KINGSTOWN—Barbados U19 cricketers emerged as champions in the regional U19 one-day tournament, completed in St. Vincent yesterday. They also won the regional 2-day tournament last week.

The regional U19 tournament started on July 23, with six teams slated to play each other. The six teams were Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados won four out of five matches, with one match being washed out. The Leeward Islands won just one match out of five. On July 28, they beat Jamaica by 19 runs. In their last match of the tournament, the Leeward Islands lost by six wickets in Barbados. A record five (5) players from St. Maarten are in the final XI. This is the first time that St. Maarten has produced five (5) players in a Leeward Islands team. The five (5) St. Maarten players are Tyanick Honore, Michael Palmer, Nathan Edward, Davenand Singh, and Israel Morton.  Yesterday, Leeward Islands won the toss and posted a below-par 105 all out of 39.4 overs. The players in double figures were Morton with 20 off 37 balls (1 four), Singh with 19 off 55 balls (1 six), Captain Jewel Andrew from Antigua with 17 off 29 balls (2 fours), Carlton Pluck from Antigua with 12 off 28 balls (2 fours), and Palmer with a run-a-ball 11 (1 four). In response, Barbados overhauled the target with just about half of the overs to spare.  The wicket takers for the Leeward Islands were Palmer, who took two for 31 off five overs, Morton, with one for 15 off 4.1 overs, and Micah Mc Kenzie from Antigua, who took one for 33 off eight overs. The quintet of players from St. Maarten had mixed performances, with Palmer topping the batting charts and Morton in the bowling department. Palmer’s scores in the tournament were 11, 74, 9, 2 and 0 for an aggregate of 96 runs. He also got five wickets. Honore’s scores were 0, 5, 19, 56 and 5 for a total of 85 runs. Singh scored 19, 0, 24, 20 and 0 for 63 runs. Morton scored 20, 13, 0, 0 and 0 for a total of 33 runs. He collected eight wickets. Edward scored 7, 0,1, 0 and 15 for 23 runs. He collected seven wickets. Palmer was the best player for the Leeward Islands, scoring 96 runs in five innings and collecting five wickets.
