KINGSTOWN—In a truncated regional U19 cricket tournament in St. Vincent, the Leeward Islands placed fourth, while Barbados took the championship trophy. The Leeward Islands, filled with a record five St. Maarten players, were in first place after the second round but slipped badly in the third round to the eventual champions. The five (5) St. Maarten players are Tyanick Honore, Michael Palmer, Nathan Edward, Davenand Singh and Israel Morton. Hurricane Beryl disrupted Cricket West Indies (CWI) initial plans for the tournament, which called for all six regional teams in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago to compete against each other in three-day matches. However, those plans were changed to three rounds only and reduced to two-day matches. Barbados got first innings points over Jamaica (2nd place) in a drawn match. Barbados 200 for nine and 172 for two, and Jamaica 127 for eight declared. The Windward Islands (3rd place) and Leeward Islands (4th place) played for tame draw. The Windward Islands scored 96 all out and 151 for seven, while the Leeward Islands scored 78 all out and 99 for seven. Guyana won first innings points over Trinidad and Tobago to gain fifth place. Guyana posted 249 all out, and Trinidad and Tobago scored 90 and 71 for five. The quintet of players from St. Maarten had mixed performances, with Honore topping the batting charts and Edward in the bowling department. Against Windwards, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana Honore scored 16, 56, 0, 16, 24 and 81 for 193 runs. Palmer’s scores were 0, 13, 14, 8, 0, 64 and 24 for a tally of 123. He also collected 10 wickets. Edward’s scores were 13, 5, 7, 17, 0 and 3, for a total of 45 runs. He grabbed 11 wickets also. Singh’s scores were 16, 3, 18, 0, 4, 4 and 22 not out for an aggregate of 67 runs. Morton’s scores were 13, 0, 5, and 5 not out for 23 runs. He collected one wicket. The one-day segment of the regional U19 tournament begins today. The Leeward Islands will take on Trinidad and Tobago at the Sion Hill Playing Field, the Windward Islands will battle Barbados at Park Hill Playing Field, and Guyana will match skills with Jamaica at the Arnos Vales Stadium. All the matches begin at 9:30 a.m.
