U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS –St. Maarten’s Intellectual Football Club and Academy (IFCA) sent 32 youth players to the U.S. Virgin Islands to take part in a friendly soccer exchange with the Castaways Soccer Club over the Easter weekend. The IFCA teams—made up of players ages 6 to 13—played more than 20 matches across two islands: St. Thomas and St. John.
Players were grouped into four teams by age, with each team playing at least four games. The youngest group played six. Getting there was part of the experience. The group flew to Tortola, took a ferry to St. Thomas, and another to St. John for the second day of matches. The exchange was made possible through the support of sponsors including TelEm, Guardian Group, Oyster Bay Resort, AUC. Sale & Pepe, Dental Care Clinic, SXM Pool, and SkipJack. Founded in 2021, IFCA offers additional training to youth players looking to improve their game and gain exposure outside the island. “We want to give players more opportunities to train and compete,” said Coach Burton. “Trips like this help them grow as players and as individuals.” The invitation to visit the Virgin Islands came after Castaways took part in the 2023 IFCA Summer Sizzle International Tournament in Sint Maarten. That visit led to this return trip, aimed at continuing the connection between the two clubs. Young player Nael reflected on the experience: “It was challenging playing against different teams. I learned that the Castaways were respectful if someone got injured. The players were very nice to us after the game.” Jaan added: “I loved it, Coach. I wish it was longer.” Kyle said: “We won our games. I just wanted to play more.” Joseph Limeburner, President of Castaways/LRVI, had welcomed the team, parents, and coaches, and praised the visit as a valuable opportunity for youth development through sport. IFCA plans to continue offering more travel and tournament experiences as part of its long-term player development program.
