ST. JOHN’S, Antigua--The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Five Islands Campus (FIC) is set to host its first 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, March 30, at 6:30am, according to a press release from the institution.
The event, which is being held in partnership with the Five Islands Primary School, aims to promote health and wellness while raising funds for student scholarships and school programmes in the Five Islands area, it adds.
Principal of The UWI Five Islands Campus, Professor C. Justin Robinson, highlighted the event’s dual mission: “This 5K isn’t just about physical activity – it’s about uniting the community to support education and healthier lifestyles.” The initiative builds on the campus’s existing health campaigns, such as “No Sugar November” and a New Year’s step challenge, which encouraged daily goals of 5,000 to 15,000 steps.
Principal of Five Islands Primary School, Alden James underscored the partnership’s long-term vision. “This event strengthens our bond with The UWI Five Islands Campus, which adopted our school during its 60th anniversary celebrations. We envision a future where our students not only participate in these initiatives but also aspire to attend UWI. Together, we’re building a healthier, more connected community.”
The 5K route will begin and end at The UWI FIC, guiding participants along the scenic route with logistical support from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force and the Antigua and Barbuda Cadet Force, according to the release. Registration fees – EC $20 for primary/secondary students, EC $30 for tertiary students and EC $40 for adults (with group discounts available) – will directly fund scholarships at The UWI FIC and initiatives at Five Islands Primary School, including the uniforms programme and educational supplies.
Participants in the 5K Run/Walk will receive commemorative T-shirts and giveaways. The event is sponsored by the Citizenship by Investment Unit, Townhouse Megastore, Stonewall Reloaded, Green Apple Café, The Ahkimo Group and The UWI Five Islands Campus, the release concludes.
