ORIENT BAY--The Caribbean Foiling Championships is to add a Wing Foil Race Class for its upcoming event scheduled to take place December 10-12, 2021. Wing Foiling is a new foil discipline, perfectly suited for the event that acts as Caribbean platform for all foilers.
Wing foiling is a new board riding sport, a discipline that follows the foil trend that has been developing in recent years. Wing foiling sits between Kite Foiling and Wind Foiling, the sport combining great aspects of both these disciplines into something that feels completely new.
In the past eight months the Wing Foil Industry took off, gaining a lot of interest. Participation numbers in the sport grew rapidly but the performance side of the sport is yet to be developed.
After multiple requests to the event organisation from fanatic Wing Foilers wanting to practice their racing skills, organisers consented by adding a Wing Foil Race Class to the already existing Wind and Kite Foil classes.
“We believe foiling is intended to promote interest, excitement and engagement in the sport. It caters not just to Olympic level sailors but to a broad array of participants,” co-founder of the Caribbean Foiling Championships, Sacha van der Wouden, explains. “We are here to promote foiling on beautiful St. Martin and that is why we added a Wing Foil Race Class to the event.
“We always say that the Caribbean Championships is for everybody, and when we say everybody, we mean everybody: Kite Foilers, Wind Foilers, Wing Foilers, Professionals, amateurs, adults and rising Stars.”
As the official Wing Foil Race format is still to be developed by World Sailing (world governing body for the sport) race officials of the Caribbean Foiling Championships have decided to only have one Wing Foil Race Class with all levels in the same group who will only take part in the course races.
“The Wing Foil Race Class will have their own start and will mostly be racing the same courses as the Wind and Kite Foil leisure Classes. The only difference is that the Wing Foil Class won’t take part in the Round the Island Race on Sunday, simply because it is a high-risk course and we can’t guarantee their safety,” said Race Officer for the event, Sacha Daunar. “As a substitute for missing the Round the Island Race, we will be adding some fun Course Races in Orient Bay.”
For those interested in joining the event, registration for the Caribbean Foiling Championships 2021 will open next week. For more information email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
