Sweet ABA

Making the world sweeter for children with disabilities

Is your child non-verbal? Are they afraid to get a haircut? Do they need help with their anger or social skills? Do you need help when your child throws a tantrum? Do you need help getting your child to do a hard skill?

The very first Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Company on St. Maarten offering services to children with learning disabilities is now open. The company was formerly on St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands (USVI) where it helped parents and supported 10 schools regarding children with autism. Honey Sheridan MS., BCBA provides a customised programme and parental support to help your child achieve their full potential.

What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is the scientific approach to understanding your child’s behaviour. Why are they having a tantrum? What should I do when they have a tantrum? Why are they not making friends? Why are they afraid to get a haircut? ABA helps you to understand these questions. ABA looks at three things: What happened before the behaviour? What is the behaviour? What happens after the behaviour? ABA therapy is recognised throughout the world. In many countries, your health insurance company may pay for ABA therapy. ABA therapy has been practised since the 1960s.

Why am I qualified to help your child?

My experience with children with disabilities ranges from preschool age (2+) to transitional age adults (18-22). For over 10+ years I taught special education, specifically ABA therapy, in the United States. I have taught at every level of education from elementary, to junior high, to high school including adult transition students. After my teaching career I became a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA). In order to become a BCBA you must have a master’s degree, complete the BCBA coursework, be supervised by another BCBA, and then sit for a Board Exam. Once you have passed the Board Exam, you become a licensed BCBA, and a BCBA may practice ABA therapy. Just like a medical doctor or a licensed psychologist the BCBA must maintain their licence with further education. This ensures that BCBA is using the most current research. I have provided special education teachers, general education teachers, para-professionals and school administration training on Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). I have collaborated with a range of professionals from social workers, psychologists, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and parents to provide successful curriculum behaviour therapy.

What can you expect from ABA therapy?

ABA therapy may be practised in the child’s home, at their school, and or in the community. The BCBA will meet with you to discuss your child’s specific needs. Next a plan will be developed with the family’s input. Cultural, religious, and amount of family involvement is an important part of the process. The ABA therapist will work directly with your child and over time coach you, your family, siblings, or other caretakers how to continue working with your child. Your child’s progress will be presented to you on a graph so that anyone may see the child’s improvement. Once your child is having success, the ABA therapist fades their support out and will check in with you regularly. Your child may need more ABA therapy in the beginning and then less as they have more success.
