163_JujutsuTop five benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for kids

The study of martial arts is great for children's social and physical development; here is a short list of why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is great for kids:

5. Team Building/camaraderie

In training, each student needs to work with a partner. This allows kids to interact and create friendships with other children outside of the classroom or family setting.

4. Respect

One of the core values BJJ teaches is respect. Upon entering the training area, all students are required to greet and shake hands with all adults; and then after the class, team members line up to shake each other's hands. Before and after sparring, students are required to bow and shake hands, acknowledging their opponent.

3. Conflict resolution

BJJ requires students to stay calm and problem-solve. Using brute force and strength quickly tires out a fighter. BJJ is a chess match of leverage and technique and it is a sport that anyone can learn regardless of natural talent, strength or coordination. BJJ also provides a safe environment for competition, under the guidance of instructors.

2. Self-defence

BJJ can be considered self-defence with submissions. Kids' classes focus specifically on self-defence scenarios and empowering kids to avoid dangerous situations. While the ultimate goal is to dominate your opponent, the most fundamental skills BJJ teaches is how to defend and escape from dangerous positions.

1. Self-discipline

Self-discipline is absolutely crucial to survival and success in life. The practice of BJJ puts kids in difficult positions and requires them to stay calm under pressure.

BJJ classes are offered to four different age groups: 4-6, 7-9, 10-15 and older teens/adults. On October 3, the dojo is moving from the Dance Theater studio at Megaplex Cinemas to 15 Wellington Road in Cole Bay above Comm Systems, opposite PDG.
