Fundraiser
Running the various programmes under Nature Foundation is serious business that costs money. In an effort to raise much needed funds, the foundation will be hosting a barbecue on Saturday, September 27, at Kim Sha Beach in Simpson Bay.
The barbecue will coincide with the hosting of the Third Annual Lionfish Derby, which is being held at the same location on the same date (see related story).
Barbecue feast time will be from 11:00am to around 5:00pm; the menu will include delicious portions of fish, ribs and chicken with locally made delectable journey cakes. An assortment of beverages will also be on sale. So walk with hearty appetites and full wallets to support this worthy cause.
Nature Foundation official Tadzio Berrvoets said proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Foundation’s lionfish project. He said the foundation is in need of equipment to help it in its efforts to continue to control the lionfish population in the country’s waters. “We hope to raise as much as possible for this programme during the barbecue fundraiser, but we need at least US $1,000 to get the equipment we need.”
Lionfish are an invasive venomous fish that can inflict a painful and sometimes fatal sting. Lionfish are usually found in the Indian and Pacific Ocean, but were introduced into the Atlantic through the aquarium trade. Native fish species do not recognise the lionfish as a threat so they are unable to defend themselves against it. In other places where lionfish were spotted, there are hardly any snappers and grouper left because the lionfish indulges on these types of fish.
Tickets can be purchased on location or in advance from Nature Foundation staff members – $7 Ribs or Chicken; $10 Fish.
