Boardwalk celebrations

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s SXM’s first Air Show

All eyes will be set on the skies above Boardwalk Boulevard on Sunday, November15, for St. Maarten’s first ever Air Show around midnight.

The Air Show will be the grand finale of the St. Maarten/St. Martin Day activities. The Airport urges the entire populace to come out.

The 15- to 20-minute show will be held after the monthly Boardwalk Jazz Festival and is a special treat to the people of St. Maarten from Princess Juliana International Airport SXM. Expected to be a thrilling spectacle that would include sky diving, the Air Show is being coordinated by award-winning Red Bull Air Race pilot Frank Versteegh, who has over 40 years’ experience in aviation.

Versteegh has flown more than 180 different kinds of aircraft in over 1,400 aerobatic displays in 40 countries and is chairman of the working group charged with writing new Air Show rules and regulations for the Dutch Civil Aviation Authority.

Besides the Air Show, the event will include a Family Fun Day starting at 12:00 noon, with lots of fun and exciting activities for both children and adults. Dance and music will featured, from steel pan to DJs, with crowd favourites Youth Waves Band dishing out some of their top hits and taking the fans into a special edition of the Boardwalk Jazz Festival, which is being organised in collaboration with the Down Street Community Council.

Highlight of the Boardwalk Jazz Festival will be Carlyle Barriteau, a home-grown international guitarist based in the USA.

The Boardwalk Jazz Festival is a once-a-month event that brings together some of the island’s talented musicians and bands for an evening of entertainment, great music and friends in an atmosphere that is truly Caribbean.
