Fish bringing plenty ‘political melee’ to Calypso competition

If you missed any of the political developments that occurred on the island in the past year, reigning Calypso King Alberto “Fish the Mega Boss” Arrendel will remind you at this year’s Carnival Calypso competition.

Fish intends to defend his title by coming hard with the “political melee.”

“The fans made their requests early what they expect of me in this competition; and I am not a person to disappoint the people,” Fish tells Out ‘n About. “They demanded two political melees and I will comply with their requests in both rounds. I’m not just competing to win; I have to bring the people's message across clear and concise.”

In the first round, he will sing a song he calls “Bandits,” while in round two, he will sing “Not Voting Again.” He reminds fans that when it comes to his songs, “I can mean what I say and don't mean what I say.”

The four-time Calypso King (2003, 2013 and 2015), said 2015 was “a proclamation moment in calypso for me” when he won the title with his songs “In Reverse and “Focus Up.”

“In every competition I enter, I try to put my best foot forward and perform to the best of my ability and please the crowd with my renditions. Short changing the public is not on my agenda on any given day, so you can expect me to always be ready to do what I do best.”

He said winning doesn’t really matter, but he tells his competitors to “come good” if they want to get the crown from him. “If you’re coming to face me, come good because I will not be holding back. Competition means being competitive. When it's all over, we can all be friends again, no hard feelings.”

He tells patrons to expect a few surprises from him.

Fish will also compete in the second annual Soca Rumble competition. For this competition, he says, “I intend to get on bad on stage that night” using my years of experience.
