He lost his Calypso crown to Fish the Mega Boss during last year’s Senior Calypso Competition, but this year Young Carlix The Protégé (Rumini Rogers) will spare no rods to reclaim the crown.
“My people can expect nothing, but the best from Young Carlix The Protégé at the Senior Calypso Competition. I always leave my heart on the stage,” he tells Out n About. “I won’t go into detail on what I will be singing about, but the scheduled release date of one of my songs is March 17. I’m always dynamic and creative and I believe my people will love what I have in store for them this carnival.”
A law enforcement officer by profession, Young Carlix The Protégé won the Senior Calypso Crown in 2014 from a field of seasoned calypsonians, but lost it last year when he placed sixth. “I was disappointed (to place sixth), but the judges’ decision is final. I’ve bounced back from it as I don’t live in the past. I just have to make a louder statement this year.”
In 2014, he sang “Don’t Judge My Age” and “We Still Ain’t Ready”. In 2015, he sang “One Caribbean” and “Wake Up.”
He is no stranger to calypso as he has been a frequent competitor and had also won the Junior Calypso Competition in 2008, with the inspirational song “Education is the Key.”

Asked what his expectations for this year’s competition are, Young Carlix The Protégé said, “My expectations are to please my people. I do this for them. Once they are satisfied, I can live with that. I believe in pleasing my people before myself. Long live calypso!”
