The current reigning Ms. St. Maarten Shanice Powell is using her platform to change lives. Here’s what she has to say about one of her newer ventures:
As a pageant girl, we often end up with dresses we can no longer use. These dresses stay in our closet and can become wasted space. With the Glass Slipper project, persons who are willing to donate (new or used) dresses or tux's give an opportunity to a graduating student who is not able to get that extravagant outfit due to several reasons. All outfits are donated and inspected before being handed over.
On June 16, I met with Tamica Joseph to meet with two young ladies who needed assistance from the Glass Slipper project. I was able to interact and get a brief background of one of the girls at-home situation and spend a few moments getting to know her. Winy is such a beautiful young lady who is afraid to come out of her shell. When she tried on the dresses that day, Tamica and I saw a small sparkle in her eye that showed how thankful she was to be able to attend Prom and graduation in such a beautiful gown. Denise, although I was not fortunate to meet her in person, I was happy to hear about the excitement she felt after trying on her potential Prom dress.
I'd like to thank all the young women who donated their dresses in such immaculate condition to help the Glass Slipper project go smoothly, and a special thank you to Tamica Joseph for allowing me to help her out with transforming the girls. I'm going to continue this tradition for years to come as I believe this will be beneficial for those who are in such difficult situations. I know there may have been more young women and men who could have benefited from the project but may be afraid or embarrassed to speak up. The goal is to give every graduate the opportunity to look like a queen or king on their once-in-a-lifetime night.
As senior queen it is my duty to instil projects and activities to enhance the social improvement of my island and I'm grateful to the population of St. Maarten for their continuous support.
