Looking for something more stylish?

Whether you love them or hate them, facemasks are now dominating society as one of the new necessities. Along with social distancing, facemasks help to minimise the spread of Covid-19 by creating a barrier between you and another person.

Many masks are for precautionary measures, meaning they’re more for everyday use by ordinary people. But the ones that are currently for sale are mainly for medical use, and while they’re required, it would help if the public left the medical masks for the wonderful people who need them on the frontlines. Also, medical masks are disposable, which means you will have to dispose of them after every use, and that’s not great for the environment since they’re ending up in the oceans. Another thing to note is that not all facemasks are created equal – meaning they can be a bit drab.

If you’re looking to solve these problems, look no further! Local entrepreneurs are offering reusable masks with different benefits, styles, colours and sizes. The Out n’ About will be scouring the internet and social media for more local vendors selling masks and protective wear. This week, we have “Kalaboom Cares” and “Leighloe” – both local entrepreneurs, both with great designs, each with their own flare.

Leighloe masks are made with a double layer of fabric; the front layer is cotton and the back is polyester. There is an opening on top of the layers of the mask to put filters in. Leighloe carries a pleated style, which is user-friendlier and easily fits the faces of both men and women. There is also a separate size for children up to 12 years old. The fabrics used were already in stock.

They are mainly African Ankara and Kente prints or Batiks from Java, Surinam Pangi, different Madras and other cultural prints, which Leighloe originally specialised in and used when making clothing for the customers. The price is $15 per mask and people can contact Leighloe on WhatsApp at +1 721 586-0424, Facebook @Leighloe1 and Instagram @Leighloe.sx.

Kalaboom Cares has been on the frontlines delivering food to healthcare workers and law enforcement officers on both sides. This week, they came out with a line of masks for the general public. Offering two styles and multiple sizes, the Kalaboom masks vary in colour. They have plain colour masks, some for men, some for women, some unisex and some matching adult and children masks.

Kalaboom masks are also made with cloth materials and have a space to remove and clean the filters between uses. They also sell the replacement hygienic filters. If you have and questions or delivery inquiries, contact them on Facebook @KalaboomEvents, Instagram @KalaboomEvents, or WhatsApp @ +1 721 522 7841.

If you know of any local mask or protective-wear sellers, please contact the Out n’ About using the email on the second page.
