Veteran Journalist and Media/PR Consultant Mike Granger is the new station manager of radio station My88.3fm. He started his tenure at the station on Wednesday, September 19. No stranger to radio, Granger is looking forward with excitement to expanding on what My88 has established over the past five years: “In terms or presence, you can still call My88 a new option on the radio waves. The station enjoys quality sound and a quality format. Now it’s time to expand and build on that with cohesion of great music and great programming.”
Granger explained that the station’s general format will expand to include more popular chart-topping music, while not totally deviating from the current adult contemporary format. Additionally, the station will embark on a recruitment drive for radio talent to “bring life” to the My88 experience. “People follow people,” Granger said. “Great on-air personalities that fit the mould of what we are trying to create at My88 will be given a fair opportunity to build their own brand within that mould and by extension build the station as the go-to choice. So we will be launching a drive to recruit new voices with new radio entertainment ideas,” he said, adding that My88 will seek to present a full schedule of entertainment programming daily, including news.
He further explained that My88 will also be more active in the community, seeking to partner with several community based initiatives. “I believe any radio station must be community minded. Those are your listeners, your supporters. There are initiatives that would benefit from the support of radio as a partner. This will be a very important aspect for us,” Granger said.
“Radio in the 21st century requires some creativity, but it is still radio and some norms will always remain. People don’t want to be yelled at; they don’t need to feel like they’re in a club with music interruptions every two minutes. They want good content and great music, and they want to be informed. Those basic principles do not change when it comes to radio. Also, it’s really a privilege to be on the air in the generation where there are so many social media platforms that can complement radio. We plan on taking full advantage of all of them in expanding My88. Great music will always be the priority. There is a way to take our listeners on a quality ride of music if you do it the right way, and they won’t even care or realize the various genres they are experiencing. But they will know they’ve heard great music.”
My88.3 begins roll-out of new shows with
‘My A.M. Shine & The King James Show’
Focus on great music to remain
My88.3FM will launch its new daily line-up of radio shows on Monday, November 19, spearheaded by its morning and mid-morning-to-afternoon programs, which the station announced over the weekend.
Local celebrity King Vers and Sjenaya will hold down the coveted morning slots on My88.3 with “My A.M. Shine”, giving the station a morning broadcast with new, innovative ideas to involve the community first and foremost as well as businesses who wish to advertise on the show/station.
My A.M. Shine will also give listeners the opportunity to win cash daily, engaging the community through life changing opportunities, on-air activities and direct in-person contact with listeners. Informative and out-of-the-box topics will also be discussed, weekly games, pranks and new segments never attempted on radio in St. Maarten. My A.M. Shine will run daily from 7:00am to 10:30am.
Following My A.M. Shine on the airwaves in the mid-morning slot will be The King James Show hosted by Kelvin James aka “King James” with his sidekick DJ Kembe. This program will focus primarily on music with 15-minute mixes, engaging segments, news updates, local and international sports and much more. Both of the shows will be guided by Production Director Omari Ferrari. The King James Show will run daily from 10:30am to 2:00pm.
“We are very excited about the potential of both of these shows,” Station Manager of My88.3 Mike Granger said. “A lot of thought and preparation are going into both shows, with creative ideas to approach radio as the strength of both shows. I wish I could unveil everything that these dynamic hosts will be bringing, but good things come to those who wait. We will also include all forms of modern media as part of our broadcasts, including live streaming and fully taking advantage of that medium.”
“Our hosts are no strangers to the entertainment industry and have huge followings. My88.3 wants to be different and we always want to keep our listeners and businesses that decide to support our shows engaged. There will be a lot of information coming out about the shows, promo videos, the full works, to make sure that, come November 19 and beyond, you keep it locked to My88.3.”
Granger added that the station will also be announcing the rest of its daily line-up over the next few days. “About 80% of the station will remain in our adult contemporary format, with smooth music and Top 40 chart hits dominating the airwaves. With the exception of the early morning show (My A.M. Shine), all other shows will be heavily music centric. From 3:00 to 7:00pm, for example, there will be strictly great music, modern and old school – a formula that people have come to expect and love from My88.3.”
“We will also be hosting a re-launch event for the entire station in November. More info will come about that. We have a lot in store for radio on St. Maarten. We aim to be a true community station where service clubs, foundations, etc., can partner with us to meet their objectives and where we entertain, enlighten and empower,” Granger concluded.
‘Smooth, Cool, Soulful’
keeps the spirit alive
Great music is the core of My88.3FM. There is a deep love for adult contemporary music, old school R&B, soul and, yes, even smooth old school hip hop.
“Smooth, Cool, Soulful” is the essence of the sound that My88.3FM represents. It is a lot of urban adult music, with an emphasis on the soul. The show takes you back to the 70s, 80s, 90s and the early 2000s for two hours of classic sounds when you can expect to hear dance, ballads and hip hop from those eras.
“Smooth, Cool, Soulful” is a beacon to remind the faithful listeners of what My88.3FM used to be and still is: minimal commercials, very little talk and great music.
"Smooth, Cool, Soulful" will put you in a sweet groove weekdays from 3:00 to 5:00pm, starting November 19.
“Chill out with Charlie” locks
down drive-time on MY88.3
My88.3FM has its drive-time show! On Monday, November 19, the station will launch all of its new shows including “Chill out with Charlie” – its new show in the 5:00 to 7:00pm daily time slots.
Hosted by Charlesea Emilia, better known as Charlie, the show promises to be the perfect mix of great music, with a blend of light-hearted social commentary from Charlie, the sharp-witted social media voice, who so many people have come to know and appreciate.
Though new to radio, Charlie is not new to entertainment in general. She is currently the coordinator of the extremely popular Out ‘N About supplement of The Daily Herald. “We have been looking for an on-air personality who will entertain our listeners as they drive home after a long day at work. But it couldn’t just be anybody. We had many great, experienced options to choose from; but there is something about Charlie’s wit and down to earth demeanour that fits perfectly with what we are trying to do at My88.3FM – and especially in the end-of-the-day drive time hours. We wanted a new voice in those slots and we are very happy and excited that Charlie will form part of our new team,” said Granger.
“Chill out with Charlie” will not take itself too seriously and will be exactly what the title claims to be; a chill out session with the host herself.
“Our hosts are young and innovative. They will bring new aspects to radio. We purposely chose to go with mostly radio novices to bring a new sound and new experiences to radio. So from 5:00pm on November 19, and every weekday after that, let Charlie keep you entertained on that long commute home. Lock it in to My88.3FM,” Granger concluded.
Ydi is back with her sexy
session “Hushh” on My88.3fm
Ydellienne Heerenveen, affectionately known as “Ydi”, will be back on My88.3fm with her adult oriented program “Hushh”. The show will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00pm to 11:00pm starting Tuesday, November 20.
“Hushh” has a loyal adult following on radio due largely in part to its open and “almost unfiltered” discussions and general content. As the show’s tagline “A Sexy Session” indicates, Hushh will focus on relationships, love, sex, money, intimacy, any topic that touches human behaviour.
Many of these subjects overlap. Love and money, marriage and commitment, the wins, the losses, the chaos and all of the countless other moments in life that are big and important and tiny and trivial and scary and wonderful.
“You don’t reach her level of popularity without knowing what moves the needle emotionally for her audience. Ydi has developed that intuitive touch. She shares her insights about the universal topics that truly resonate with people, whoever they are and wherever they live. She also interacts fully with her listeners,” Granger said.
Granger said Ydi will make full use of live Facebook streaming through the My88.3 Facebook page: “We have been inundated with questions from the public about Ydi’s show. We are so happy to have her back and her unique brand of radio. Dynamic and compelling listener interaction is the secret sauce of a great radio show. Hushh has found that winning formula.”
