Walk/Bike - a - thon

Help create awareness for cervical cancer and the Human Papillomavirus HPV virus by participating in a fundraising bike-a-thon and walk-a-thon this Sunday, September 7.

The fundraising event is being organised by KeLaHa Projects as part of its activities for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month being celebrated this month. KeLaHa Projects is a cervical cancer awareness group.

Participants will leave the TelEm parking lot on Pond Island at 5:00am sharp. Put on your walking shoes or grab your bikes and participate in the walk/ride for cervical cancer awareness.

Tickets cost US $10 per person and proceeds from the event will go towards KeLaHa Projects' cervical cancer awareness activities in St. Maarten.

KeLaHa urges the public to join it in the "fight" against cervical cancer: "By simply walking and riding with us, not only will you be assisting in raising funds to maintain and extend our ongoing cervical cancer and HPV awareness programmes, but you will also be leaving the sidelines and joining us in the fight as no woman should die from cervical cancer as it is totally preventable."

"We will be biking/riding for our mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, granddaughters, cousins, friends and many more. Who will you be biking/walking for?"

The foundation said it is touched by the response to its awareness programmes since it was founded several years ago.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. There are about 500,000 new cases and 250,000 deaths each year. Almost 80 per cent of cases occur in low-income countries. KeLaHa Projects is holding the early morning event in an effort to raise awareness and to include the community in its battle against cervical cancer.

Unnecessary Cervical Cancer related deaths can be prevented through increased screening and effective prevention and control measures, which includes pap tests, HPV testing, vaccination against HPV and use of Visual Inspection with acetic acid VIA.

One of the simplest ways of controlling cervical cancer is the Pap test; yet in some countries, only one in five women receives Pap tests. Amongst the women diagnosed with cervical cancer, 50 per cent had never had a pap smear.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 27, for an evening of glitz, glamour and awareness for KeLaHa Project's "Teal and White" charity fundraising event, which will be held in the Soualiga Ballroom of The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort and Spa under the theme "Ending cervical cancer."

The evening starts with a cocktail reception at 6:30 and continues with dinner and awareness. Proceeds will go towards the local KeLaHa Projects Cervical Cancer and HPV awareness projects. This is one of the activities that KeLaHa Projects Foundation will be hosting as part of its cervical cancer awareness activities this month. So start looking for your best Teal and White ensemble and get ready for what is gearing up to be the biggest cervical cancer awareness activity for the month.
