Better safe than sorry

Better safe than sorry

As usual, accurately predicting the impact of Tropical Storm Ernesto is tricky business. The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) first expected the system to be 30 miles south, then 85 miles south and most recently 74 miles southwest at its closest point Tuesday evening.

Tropical storm winds extended 60 miles from the centre and that will probably increase while the cyclone strengthens. One must therefore assume such conditions in the local area.

Out of an abundance of caution, no “The Daily Herald” will be published on Wednesday and the office is closed today, Tuesday. The Thursday newspaper will be a combined edition.

Management apologises for any inconvenience, but the security and well-being of our employees and vendors comes first. Readers are also urged to take whatever measures may still be needed to get ready.

Like always, the preferred approach is to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Better safe than sorry.
