Fond memories

Fond memories

A Temporary Arrival Facility (TAF) opens at Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) today, Wednesday (see Tuesday paper). The report did not say for how long, but it’s probably until the terminal reconstruction has been fully completed.

While the timing might not seem ideal with another high season around the corner, this move is needed to allow for the last phase, namely upgrading the Arrival Hall. Despite the best of intentions, it undoubtedly translates to a bit of inconvenience for passengers, airline crew and ground staff alike certainly in the beginning, entering the busiest period of the year.

The cooperation of all involved, including Immigration and Customs officials, will be very much needed to minimise any negative impact on the comfort of travellers. Always keep in mind that first impressions count, especially among tourists.

However, it also means the long-awaited end of this project as part of the island’s recovery from a devastating hit by Hurricane Irma since September 2017 is finally in sight. A newly rebuilt Departure Hall will open next month, so that the last experience of visitors can better contribute to fond memories.

Soon the entire process of going through SXM should again become a more pleasant one, deserving of a prime Caribbean vacation destination known as “The Friendly Island” and no less than what its guests as well as residents may expect.
