Full-time job

The credentials of four new Members of Parliament (MPs) were approved on Wednesday (see related story), to replace those joining the Mercelina II Cabinet being installed on November 26. Two of the latter are in fact presently ministers and temporarily played a dual role as allowed in the Constitution for a limited period.

The incoming elected representatives include political experience in current minister Veronica Jansen-Webster and ex-minister Christopher Wever (both URSM) plus former MP Raeyhon Peterson (PFP). Dimar Labega (DP) is a newcomer, just like sitting NA-faction member Darryl York.

And there is obviously nothing wrong with fresh blood. The prior Parliament to take office only in February of this year – before a coalition crisis prompted an early return to the polls in August – had four first-time legislators, with more added when candidate ministers of the then-governing partners were appointed.

Knowledge of public affairs, how government works and parliamentary procedures no doubt help, but can be acquired. Most important are strength of character, good values, dedication to the general interest and common sense.

Although minding the people’s business well is hardly rocket science, it requires total honesty, effective communication, exemplary behaviour, a balanced approach and – especially – hard work. After all, the function gets paid as and should be considered a full-time job.
