Making a statement

Making a statement

Parliament is tentatively scheduled to meet this Friday afternoon on establishing a Permanent Committee for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry. Doing so would no doubt send a message that the so-called primary sector is being taken seriously.

It’s the legislative rather than executive branch of government, so other than debate and submit proposals to adopt or amend applicable laws, some may feel there is not that much such a committee itself could do to assist those active in the agrarian field. However, elected representatives are expected hold the Council of Ministers accountable for their relevant polices and decisions or lack thereof.

It’s no secret that cultivating more food to be less dependent on others has increasingly become a priority worldwide, also due to raging inflation. The impact of both the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Eastern Europe on production, supply as well as grocery bills confirmed this urgent need.

There are many obstacles, including a shortage of adequate available land and affordable water for irrigation. However, growers battle daily to overcome these challenges, some with success as witnessed by a significant amount of local produce being sold here these days.

The point is that much more seems possible with a proper framework for facilitation from government in all related aspects and a comprehensive approach towards the market. That may mean stricter regulation and control of, for example, livestock, to enforce quality and hygiene standards.

The goal should never be to hamper current practitioners, but to enhance professionalism. Keep in mind that their ultimate clients are not just residents but also visitors who drive the tourism economy.

To be sure, the island’s offer must remain competitive in both content and price, so active guidance and supervision by experts is indispensable. Promoting cooperation via joint interest organisations and cooperatives is one way to stimulate this development.

However, it’s about changing people’s mindset too, concerning both farming as occupation or hobby and the benefits of consuming fresh, local food. Perhaps a grand gesture like providing every household in the country with seeds of the most suitable and sustainable crops is in order.

Now that would be be making a statement.
