“Mother, mother, there’s far too many of you crying,” sang the incomparable recording artist Marvin Gay. As St. Maarten gets ready to celebrate Mother’s Day it’s good to keep those lyrics in mind.
While many men no doubt love children, the women who bear these seemingly stay tied to their babies forever and all the time, despite cutting the umbilical cord. No matter how grown up, they will always be kids to their moms.
One must therefore realise that while flowers, a treat or gifts may certainly be appreciated, having regular contact with their offspring and ensuring they are okay is usually what really matters to them. That personal touch normally cannot be adequately replaced just by material things.
It’s thus important to make efforts to see them more often in person if in any way possible or to enhance the communication via phone, Internet, etc. Nobody in their right mind would obviously forget the person who brought them into this world, but letting them know every so often that they remain in our thoughts with a simple call or email can go a long way towards putting their minds at ease.
People say a mother’s work is never done and if it regards caring for/about their children this is probably true. The best we can really hope to do is relieve them of some of their never-ending concern.
Happy Mother’s Day.
