Crime figures published in Thursday’s edition raised a few eyebrows. Although there is frequently news of violent robberies, the reported average of two per week during the first half of this year sounds like a lot.
Perhaps that’s not really the case when compared to bigger places, but as a small country and especially one with a tourism economy it gives some reason for concern. Three areas with the highest number (eight) include Lowlands, which is often visited by guests, while also heavily frequented Philipsburg (seven) and Simpson Bay (five) are not far behind.
The good news is that several suspects have been arrested. Nevertheless, a call made by the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM to prioritise safety and security should not go unheeded.
Although authorities have been increasing their presence in the most-impacted locations, they can’t possibly be everywhere at the same time. Prevention is as much a matter of behaviour and attitude as of material resources.
Always stay alert and keenly aware of your surroundings. Apparently patrons exiting adult clubs are now targetted, so be extra careful in such cases and particularly late at night.
Most important, use common sense and never let your guard down. Again, 49 incidents over a six-month period may not sound alarming, but certainly for a destination known as “The Friendly Island” each one is simply one too many.
