Rise to the challenge

Rise to the challenge

Governor Ajamu Baly delivered government’s policy statement at Tuesday’s opening of a new legislative year (see related stories) as customary. It regards plans of the caretaker Mercelina I Cabinet, which will soon make way for a new Council of Minsters backed by a majority in the next Parliament taking office on September 20, following early August 19 elections.

However, three of the four outgoing governing parties are part of the incoming coalition again and expected to maintain current ministers. The latter will thus have a chance to implement ideas mentioned.

Two, other persons representing different parties than now will nevertheless take over respectively Justice and Education, Culture, Youth and Sports (ECYS). A new governing programme is also one of the tasks “Formateur” Luc Mercelina received, as reported in Monday’s edition.

To be sure, intention statements don’t always translate to execution, as history has proven time and again. Many of the points brought forward by the governor on Tuesday were no doubt heard before.

However, ambition remains important and some of the proposed actions are not only beneficial, but downright necessary. It will be up to both the Mercelina II Cabinet and the incoming Parliament to rise to the challenge.
