The scene of the accident at the Indigo roundabout
At approximately 1:30 am, Central Dispatch of the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM received a distress call regarding the accident near the Indigo Bay roundabout. Police patrols and an ambulance promptly responded to the scene.
According to the shaken driver of a dark grey SUV, it was revealed that as the vehicle approached the Indigo roundabout, a scooter traveling towards Cole Bay lost control and collided with the driver's door. The force of the impact resulted in severe injuries to the young rider, who tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The scooter had ascended along A.J.C. Brouwers Road, navigating towards the roundabout before veering right towards Cole Bay. It's speculated that adverse weather conditions and a wet road surface could have played a role in the rider's loss of control, leading to a collision with the splitter island on the approach road to the roundabout, ultimately resulting in the fatal impact with the car. Authorities have not disclosed whether the scooter rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The investigation faced initial hurdles as other riders attempted to remove the scooter from the accident site. KPSM will provide more information as the investigation progresses.
