Camelia-Römer officially resigns

The PIN leader in Fort Amsterdam.

WILLEMSTAD--Suzanne “Suzy” Camelia-Römer submitted her resignation to Curaçao Governor Lucille George-Wout on Friday. Her last transfer as Minister of Health, Environment and Nature GMN was made on Sunday evening at 6:00.

Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning VVRP Zita Jesus-Leito (PAR) will temporarily take over her duties. Camelia-Römer made this announcement at Fort Amsterdam after her “Partido Inovashon Nashonal” (PIN) party’s only Member of Parliament (MP) Rennox Calmes went independent and withdrew his support for the governing coalition.

Party leader Camelia-Römer intends to think about what she will do next and reflect on this in the coming week. She announced that more details can be expected on Monday, but could not say yet whether a possible return as non-political minister was still an option.

Party supporters applauding her.

PIN board president Alvin Daal wrote in a letter that he had little understanding for the departure of Calmes. The latter’s motivation given in a press conference showed that he saw no value in the cooperation with governing partners PAR and MAN.

Daal said the coalition had often also included Calmes’ vision in the parliamentary debates. “However, it is also important to reach agreements with which the country can move forward.”

The chairman fails to see how Calmes can choose to remain in Parliament as an independent member, which is precisely the political practice he had criticised so much before.
