PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Customs Department seized several grams of cannabis, a large quantity of money, and ten rounds of ammunition in three separate controls on Monday and Tuesday.
Customs found several grams of cannabis on man who travelling from St. Maarten to St. Barths via the ferry at Bobby’s Marina. Authorities confiscated the drugs and the man was issued a fine of US $210. He paid the fine immediately and was then allowed to depart St. Maarten.
While conducting a control of a visiting private yacht on Tuesday, Customs officers found almost $15,000 in undeclared cash. The captain of the vessel was issued a fine, which was paid on the spot, according to Customs.
“The public should also take note that any individual or group traveling with monetary instruments, jewellery and/or valuables with a value equivalent to or exceeding $11,000, either entering or leaving St. Maarten, must declare this to Customs,” said the Customs Department on Thursday.
Customs officers also discovered 10 hollow-point bullets that could be shot from a 9-millimetre firearm on a cruise ship passenger on Tuesday. Authorities confiscated the ammunition and he was issued a fine of $500, which he paid immediately. He was then allowed to leave St. Maarten.
