PHILIPSBURG--The Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour VSA will be holding a National Employment Registration Drive this week.
The registration is being held at the Department of Labour Affairs and Social Services in the new Government Building from Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 2, from 2:00 to 5:00pm. If unable to visit the Department, online registration is also possible at
jobopportunity.sx and
sintmaartengov.org
The goal of the drive is to determine how many workers have lost their job or are working fewer hours as a direct result of the devastating impact of Hurricane Irma on the local labour market.
The Ministry intends to use the data collected to develop programmes and projects to further assist unemployed and underemployed persons in the community.
Dutch nationals, permanent residence permit holders and temporary residence permit holders who need full or part-time work are urged to participate in the registration drive to be eligible to participate in the upcoming projects and programmes that will be executed in collaboration with international organisations.
One such programme is to be organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Its objective is to hire 500 unskilled and skilled workers at varying wages, depending on expertise.
VSA will also be executing the Personal Incentives for Economic Recovery Programme (PIER) soon, to provide temporary employment, training and education to unemployed or underemployed individuals, who will participate in various social and relief projects in their respective communities.
The Ministry, during the drive, will be seeking general information from jobseekers regarding their overall employment and social situation as a direct result of losing their employment or working fewer hours. The Ministry will not use or share the information outside the scope of the National Ordinance Personal Data Protection. All results of the survey will be stored in a password-protected digital file, it was stated in a press release on Monday.
The Department of Labour Affairs encourages all jobseekers to take this opportunity to register, as “it is of the utmost importance.” Attendees should ensure that they have a valid form of identification to register.
It is the Ministry’s intension to host a second phase of the job information drive, during which jobseekers will be able to register at the community centre in their respective neighbourhood.
The National Employment Registration Drive is a collaborative effort of the VSA Ministry and UNDP.
