Environmentalist attacked at dump

WILLEMSTAD--Timo Brouwer of Curaçao environmental and recycling company Green Force was attacked at St. Joris after he followed a truck that was illegally dumping waste.

Soon after the victim was followed by a second car of which the driver threatened him. When Brouwer started to take pictures, they threw stones and physically attacked him.

When Brouwer tried to get away he was blocked. The driver of the second car threw rocks at his windshield and broke it.

“I am shocked,” said Brouwer. “But I took pictures and filed a complaint.”

When asked why he had not previously called in the police or the X-team, Brouwer replied that he went to the area because of a complaint about the truck. “Waste has been dumped here for some time and the hill is now five meters high. To file a complaint, you must be able to show photos as proof, so I decided to go see it myself.”

Brouwer says he has already reported illegal dumping nine times in the last two years. “Maybe something has been done about it once, but nothing else.”
