AIRPORT--A heavy rainfall advisory is now in effect for St. Maarten until noon, tomorrow, Saturday. The Meteorological Department issued the advisory in its 6:00am forecast that calls for generally cloudy with scattered showers and a chance of isolated thunderstorms.
The weather instability due to a mid to upper level trough, coupled with deep-layered moisture in the atmosphere will cause cloudiness and showers across the region during the next couple of days.
Some of those showers may be heavy and cause flooding in low-lying areas as well as rock falls/landslides along hillsides. Residents and users of areas prone to flooding and landslides are advised by the Met Department “to be vigilant and/or avoid these areas whenever possible.”
Seas will peak near 6 feet during the next few days. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution.
Surface winds from today through Saturday morning are expected to be east-southeasterly with a gentle to moderate breeze of eight to 16 miles per hour and possibly higher gusts.
The outlook through Sunday morning is generally cloudy with isolated showers and possible isolated thunderstorms.
