PHILIPSBURG--K1 Britannia Foundation’s Second Chance programme has collaborated with National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA) to provide the fully-sponsored MIC Institution of Technology-certified construction course.
The course is specially held for young people and residents of St. Maarten ages 17-40. The aim is to provide young people with new skills in the area of carpentry and an opportunity for persons looking to complete their Level 1 and 2 carpentry competencies, post-Hurricane Irma.
Coming from Trinidad, the MIC Institution of Technology instructors will be in St. Maarten to provide the six-month course that will begin on January 15. The course will be at NIPA five days a week, Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 12:00pm. The fully-sponsored programme has a few spaces left and is open for those who are need for an opportunity to excel and develop in carpentry.
On successful completion of the course, the programme will provide the opportunity for certification that can translate into employability or entrepreneurship possibilities for the participants. The emphasis of the programme is on useful and practical skills in their application in the context of common industrial situations.
Much of the course is given over to “hands-on” experience and the skills required in carpentry. The non-technical segments, such as Financial Management, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship Health and Safety, are to provide the participants with craftsmanship with a personal and entrepreneurial edge.
Interviews will be held prior to the intake and final selection. Committed and enthusiastic participants who are interested in learning new proficiencies are encouraged to participate. Enrolment requirements are basic knowledge of English and numeracy. Each candidate is required to fill out an intake form before the start of the programme and the deadline to do so is December 15.
K1’s Second Chance programme gives young people the foundation for positive growth through volunteer opportunities, apprenticeship programmes, courses, studies, job training, employment opportunities and social development. By giving youngsters a second chance, the long-term goal is not just to positively impact their lives, but also to contribute to the development of young role models, making them young people who will positively impact the island.
