PHILIPSBURG--The Learning Unlimited (LU) Preparatory School Student Council and Griffins presented the Rotary Club of St. Maarten with US $1,318 as a result of their fundraising efforts to support the Bahamas. A presentation was made to the Rotary Club of St. Maarten at its regular meeting at the Rotary Clubhouse on Wednesday, September 25.

Collectively, all the Rotary Clubs in St. Maarten/St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barths have raised slightly more than $19,000 to support the Bahamas, said the Rotary Club of St. Maarten in a press release.

LU Student Council President Theodore Wilson and Griffin President Stephanie Hodge said that as they learned about the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian to the Bahamas, they decided to help.

To accomplish this goal, the students had a “dress-down day” on September 20, where students could come to school not wearing the school’s required uniform. They requested a minimum of $2 from anyone who participated.

Many students donated more than the minimum amount, and one very generous child donated $100, said the students. They plan to hold a second dress-down day fundraiser in the coming months.

Dean of Academics and Head of Middle- and High School Danny Fleming was present, along with the LU Interact Board of Directors, student government officers and Griffin representatives Dhruv Sagre, Mihir Mirchandani, Drake Daboul, Devesh Mirpuri, Klaire Hall, Chelsea Norley and Kimberly Mendez.

President of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten Sherylle Horsford thanked all the members of the LU community for their donation and explained that “these funds will be forwarded directly to the Rotary Clubs of the Bahamas Disaster Relief Fund. This will assist with the immediate needs of Bahamians, including food, water, shelter and medical attention.”

The Rotary Clubs of St. Maarten/St. Martin, St. Barths and Anguilla thank the general public who have supported their various projects and initiatives.

The clubs are calling on persons “to stand with Rotary and support us in our humanitarian efforts.”
